Oblivion is a 2013 Universal Picture feature film, directed by Joe Kosinski, and starring Tom Cruise. Daniel is credited as Vehicle Designer, and designed the two main vehicles of the film: the so called Bubbleship and the Drone.
It was August 2009 when Daniel re-joined forces with Joe—with whom he worked previously on Tron Legacy—for the creation of a very unique flying machine and an army of drones. A short graphic novel and pitch to Disney Studios ( the project later switched to Universal ) was being developed for this original sci-fi story, and the main vehicle was described to as a blend of a dragonfly with a Bell 47 helicopter. The story in the making: Oblivion.
When Daniel began sketching, he couldn’t know that this machine would be one of the most elaborate projects he’d ever be involved in. Between the first drawings and the premiere in April 2013, three and a half years had passed, of which Daniel spent over one year working on the main ship, fostering its unique design all the way through the construction process to the final hand-off to Tom Cruise.
